Trackside Log for Saturday, April 24, 2010

Today I was working on my computer with the scanner on when Canadian Pacific train 246 south called up the Hamilton Subdivision dispatcher for another clearance. At the same time the defect detector at mile 27.8 went off so I didn't have much time to go for a photograph. I quickly got Missy and my camera and drove to River Road.

  • 1111 Fenwick - CP 246 south - CP 8542-SOO 6035

Well look at that. It's the same locomotive consist as train 426 from two days ago.

Later in the afternoon I was experimenting with some photographic processing on the computer when I heard another southbound obtain a clearance from the Hamilton Subdivision dispatcher. This time I had plenty of time to intercept so I chose nearby Sumbler Road for a photograph.

  • 1426 Fenwick - CP 426 south - CP 9641-CP 9605

After the relatively short train passed by I returned home.

Later in the evening as I was making some nachos to watch a movie I heard train 427 north approaching.

  • 1945 Fenwick - CP 427 north - SOO 6049-CITX 3083-CP 6055

After watching it roll by in the twilight I resumed my movie.

Trackside Log for Friday, April 23, 2010

Today I took Missy to the Welland Canal for a walk. The ulterior motive was to photograph the salty, Brant. We headed over to Allanburg to see the ship under the lift bridge there. While on our walk I heard the Trillium Railway blowing their horn for the nearby crossings. After we finished up our walk we drove north along the canal to St. Catharines both to check out the ship activity and to see if we would stumble upon the Trillium Railway train. Lo and behold, as I was driving along Queenston Street, there they were.

  • 1742 St. Catharines - Trillium Railway northbound - TRRY 110

After a couple photographs we headed home for supper. Well what do you know? Canadian Pacific train 426 called out mile board Boyle just after we ate. It was starting to get dark but I decided to try for a photograph anyway. When the train came out of the trees at Chantler Road I could tell I made the right choice.

  • 1946 Fenwick - CP 426 south - CP 6055-CITX 3083-SOO 6049

Well, that was the most interesting motive power I've seen in quite a while.

Trackside Log for Thursday, April 22, 2010

Out walking Missy.
Heard the sound of horns blowing.
Watched it roll on by.

  • 0745 Fenwick - CP 255 north - CP 9603-CEFX 1006

Then, working at home,
more horns were heard from the north.
Off to Chantler Road.

  • 0901 Fenwick - CP 246 south - CP 9557-CP 9639

Back home after work.
Another southbound nearing.
Dashed off for pictures.

  • 1650 Fenwick - CP 426 south - CP 8542-SOO 6035

Trackside Log for Tuesday, April 20, 2010

Today I took some work home with me for the afternoon. Very soon after I arrived I heard horns approaching and decided to take Missy out for a photograph. As I was leaving the house I noticed that it was a rail train crossing Church Street. I drove down to River Road for a photograph.

  • 1426 Fenwick - CP southbound rail train - CP 4656-CP 4657

After waiting for it to slowly creep by I returned home.

Later on I heard on the scanner that the rail train would be turning their train on the Canadian National at Brookfield and heading to Aberdeen Yard. The timing was going to be about right to meet it on my evening walk with Missy. I took my camera along and managed to time it pretty close.

  • 1755 Fenwick - CP northbound rail train - CP 4656-CP 4657

Then Missy and I walked back home.

Trackside Log for Sunday, April 4, 2010

It was Easter Sunday and I was going to visit my family. Just as I was about to leave the scanner piped up and train 426 reported a siding switch returned to normal in Smithville. I hoped I could make it to Boyle in time for a photograph there but was just a minute or two late. It was a nice day so I backtracked to River Road for another try. I arrived with plenty of time.

  • 1459 Fenwick - CP 426 south - CP 8603-CP 9678

Once the rather long train passed by I resumed my drive for Easter supper with my family.

Trackside Log for Saturday, April 3, 2010

Today was a bright, hazy and overly warm day for April. Missy and I were relaxing at home with the scanner on. Shortly before noon Canadian Pacific train 255 north obtained a clearance from station name sign Brookfield East to the south siding switch Kinnear. I thought today I might photograph the train departing Welland Yard.

  • 1223 Welland - CP 255 north - CP 9559-CP 9562

After photographing the power from train 254 of two days ago Missy and I returned home for lunch.

Later in the afternoon, just before I was going to take Missy for her walk, I heard horns approaching from the north. I took her over to River Road for a photograph.

  • 1507 Fenwick - CP 426 south - CP 8578-SOO 6047

After the train I walked Missy and headed to Hamilton for the Bulldogs hockey game.

Trackside Log for Friday, April 2, 2010

I was just about to go to bed for the night when Canadian Pacific train 247 north rumbled through town. I'd photographed the power on train 246 earlier.

  • 0034 Fenwick - CP 247 north - CP 8880-CP 8574

Then it was off to sleep for the night.

In the morning just as I was about to take Missy for a walk, Canadian Pacific train 255 north arrived. I only had time enough to see a CP GE, CEFX GE and two more CP GEs for power. Oh well. After our walk I decided to head to Merritton to find the Maple Leaf and also to photograph the first salty of the 2010 Welland Canal shipping season, the Federal Elbe.

  • 1009 Merritton - VIA 97 east - AMTK 180

After my photograph of the Maple Leaf I zipped over to Bridge 5 to see the Federal Elbe before heading back home.

Missy and I were relaxing at home with the scanner on when I heard a southbound call out the Boyle mile sign. I got my camera, drove Missy to River Road and walked into the soybean field for a photograph.

  • 1537 Fenwick - CP 426 south - CP 8632-CP 8568

Shortly after returning home I heard train 426 talking to a northbound that was approaching Welland Yard. After nearly three hours switching Welland Yard the train finally obtained a clearance to proceed north. I took Missy to Farr Street for a photograph before our evening walk.

  • 1822 Fenwick - CP 427 north - SOO 6047-CP 8578

The crew of the train mentioned on the radio that they entered Welland Yard with nine cars. I figure they lifted everything in the yard because they were a rather large train leaving it.

Later in the evening I took Missy out before bed and heard the sound of horns again. We walked over to see what it was.

  • 2238 Fenwick - CP 254 south - CP 8637-CEFX 1018-CP 7309

Sure, run the neat stuff in the dark. Oh well.

Trackside Log for Thursday, April 1, 2010

Today I left work at Welland a bit early so I could take some work home with me. It was a beautiful afternoon and shortly after arrival I heard the sound of approaching horns. Missy and I dashed out to Chantler Road for a photograph of what turned out to be Canadian Pacific train 246 south.

  • 1526 Fenwick - CP 246 south - CP 8880-CP 8574

Then it was back home to finish up my work so I could enjoy the long weekend.

Later in the evening I was still listening to the scanner when I heard the detector at mile 27.8 of the Canadian Pacific Hamilton Subdivision go off with a "system not working" message. Apparently train 426 south went into emergency on top of it. After regaining their air they continued through town. I figured although it was getting dark I'd take Missy out to see it anyway.

  • 2000 Fenwick - CP 426 south - CP 8578-SOO 6047

After it passed by I went back inside. Later on I heard train 254 south approaching and figured, "Hey, why not go have a look?"

  • 2316 Fenwick - CP 254 south - CP 9562-CP 9559

And there it was. CP 9562 was back yet again.
